Ottawa HomePerformance Energy Advisors are a vital part
of our effort to deliver Natural
Resources Canada’s ecoENERGY Retrofit Incentive in Ottawa, as well
as communities across Ontario and Canada.
This national program provides energy audits to help Canadians renovate for
improved energy efficiency.

What you need
To become an Ottawa HomePerformance Advisor,
you’ll need pre-requisite skills, plus
an equipment package, training and certification to operate
as an official energy advisor under the Canada ecoENERGY Retrofit program.

Pre-requisite skills
To apply to become a Certified Ottawa HomePerformance
Energy Advisor, you should have the following
pre-requisite skills or experience:
- Familiarity with home building and construction
terminology or ...
- A minimum of two years experience in the
building/renovation industry or ...
- home inspector training or ...
- A background in any of the following: engineering,
architecture, home heating/cooling systems,
or construction.
Plus ...
- Be good with computers.
- Be physically fit.
- Have at least high school geometry and math.
- Have good communication skills in English.
Equipment requirements
To become a certified Ottawa HomePerformance
Energy Advisor, you must have your own equipment, including ...
- Your own vehicle
- Blower door equipment
- Laptop computer (1GHz or higher) with a portable colour printer
- A digital camera
- Sheet-feed scanner
- High-speed internet connection
- Portable ladder
- A variety of small hand tools
Advisor training — Ottawa
You’ll attend an official energy auditor training course
to learn the specific skills you’ll need to be a
Ottawa HomePerformance Energy Advisor.
During this five-and-a-half-day intensive training session,
you’ll receive ...
- Building science classroom instruction
- Field practice on actual houses
- Computer and software set-up assistance
- Technical support
- Preparation for writing federal government examination
Once you complete classroom training, you will demonstrate
competency by performing seven ecoENERGY assessments.
Your instructors will review your energy audit work and provide
valuable feedback.
Advisor certification
You’ll become officially certified as an ecoENERGY
Advisor once you have successfully completed your seven assessments and
passed a two-hour online examination administered by Natural
Resources Canada.
By signing a contract, Ottawa home energy advisors agree to be bound
by the terms and conditions of Building Insight’s license agreement
with Natural Resources Canada. Advisors who fail to follow these terms
and conditions will be de-certified.
Building Insight performs regular quality assurance by auditing
all aspects of an Ottawa energy advisor’s work. Quality assurance auditing
activities include surveying Ottawa customers and on-site advisor audits
by our field coaches.
Code of Ethics
Your energy audit work in Ottawa is governed by strict Code of
Ethics guidelines developed by Natural Resources Canada.
- As an Ottawa HomePerformance Energy Advisor,
you are an energy audit professional who offers unbiased advice
during home energy audits. Your energy audit duties must be
exercised with integrity, fairness, and impartiality and shall not be
influenced by conflicting interests.
- Advisors must recommend
customers receive more than one bid before
selecting a contractor.
- Under no condition may an Advisor
accept, or offer, a commission for retrofit
services and materials.
