Toronto-area homeowner Nicholas Tyce wanted to make his 1955 Scarborough bungalow feel warmer in the winter, and he knew that improving the home’s old furnace was a smart investment.
But when he had a home energy audit, to make sure his new high-efficiency furnace would qualify for the Canadian government’s ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes grants, he got a pleasant surprise.
Not only did he discover that his furnace would be eligible for as much as $1,000 in grants and rebates, but there were many more ways to improve his home’s comfort and get grants for those energy-saving renovations, too.
“We learned that we needed to increase the insulation,” Tyce says. “We were after the rebate for the furnace, but thought we should take advantage of the rebates for the insulation since we needed to increase it, and it would make our home warmer.”
For example, Tyce says, the basement was “freezing” before he added insulation to his basement walls. Afterwards, it felt more comfortable.
Tyce also installed two new high-efficiency thermal windows, which were Energy-Star rated for the Toronto climate zone.
Thermal windows help save energy because they have an insulative layer of air or inert gas between the panes, which prevents heat from moving as quickly through the panes of glass. Energy Star ratings mean the windows have been certified as among the most efficient windows available.
Finally, Tyce chose a new 90 percent efficiency gas furnace, which would use less fuel than his home’s old furnace. Because of the added insulation and better windows, the furnace would be able to work more efficiently, cutting down on fuel costs.
The grants and rebates from the ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes initiative and the Ontario Home Energy Savings program really helped with his renovations, says Tyce. “We wouldn’t have done as much as we have, if the grants weren’t available.”
Overall, the process was “well worth it,” says Tyce, who adds he’d recommend the ecoENERGY program to other Canadians, especially “if you plan to upgrade a bunch of things in your home.”
