When Scarborough homeowner David Tangness had a home energy audit on his two-storey Toronto-area home, he learned a lot about home energy efficiency — and he learned one important fact that made him breathe a sigh of relief. The good news was that his home was in better shape than he’d thought.
Like many homes of its era, though, the 1967 house needed some renovations to improve its energy efficiency. “The furnace was old, noisy, and in bad shape — and the humidifier didn’t even work,” says Tangness. The air conditioner also needed upgrading, to become as energy efficient as possible.
The Toronto Home Energy Advisor who conducted the energy audit suggested Tangness install a new high-efficiency gas furnace, which would use less energy for heating the 1,600-square-foot home.
It would also be quieter, because the DC-variable speed motor, such as those found on the highest-efficiency furnaces, circulates the air more steadily. The results were immediately apparent: the house has a much more even temperature and it’s much more comfortable now, says Tangness.
Central air conditioner
By replacing his home’s central air conditioner with a high-efficiency Energy Star-rated central air system, Tangness could take advantage of grants and rebates from the governments of Canada and Ontario. Plus, he saved time and money by installing both pieces of equipment at once. “We had it all done at the same time,” Tangness says. “It was easier to get a package deal.”
Energy saving benefits
Another benefit of the new furnace and air conditioner is the amount of money they save on the home’s energy bills.
Even though the past winter was colder than the previous year, Tangness could quickly tell that the gas bills after the renovations were lower than the year before. With lower bills and a whisper-quiet furnace, the overall result is a better quality of life.
“The living conditions are better,” Tangness says, adding that the quiet is even more important than the savings he’s seen.
And the fact that he’s making a difference to the environment matters a lot, too: by making energy-saving upgrades to his home, Tangness was able to reduce his home’s greenhouse gas emissions by as much as three tonnes a year.
