The old furnace in Ms. Lachance’s Ottawa-area home was really a blast from the past: It was old, and blasted so much hot air it actually made her home feel uncomfortable, instead of cozy and warm like it was supposed to.
“It felt like a jet rocket when it was on,” she says. “You could feel the floor shake in the living room.”
The old furnace was just too powerful for the small 1959 Ottawa bungalow. Every 20 minutes, it blasted hot air for four minutes, then turned off again — creating pockets of warm and cold that made the Ottawa house uncomfortable, with noticeable drafts.
Home energy audit
Lachance decided to get an expert opinion on her furnace, so she called in an Ottawa Home Energy Advisor, who conducted a detailed audit of the furnace, and examined the home’s overall energy use and performance. During the home energy audit energy audit, Lachance learned about how to choose a better furnace, and found out about a variety of other ways she could renovate to improve her home’s energy efficiency.
Following the advice of her Ottawa home energy advisor, Lachance chose a new high-efficiency gas furnace with a DC variable-speed motor.
This kind of furnace is among the most efficient type of natural gas furnace ever produced. It uses only a small amount of natural gas to begin with, and extracts as much heating energy from that natural gas as possible.
That means Lachance spends less on natural gas, because her home’s new furnace doesn’t have to work as hard, making it more efficient. Since installing her new furnace, Lachance says, her natural gas costs have gone down.
But best of all, the new gas furnace makes the home feel much more comfortable. Even though the new gas furnace is smaller and uses less fuel, the silent motor circulates the air more evenly, making every room feel pleasantly warm instead of blasting the whole house with too much heat. “It’s a lot more comfortable and a lot quieter,” she says.
