a smart choice
Every homeowner dreads
the day — or the night — when the old furnace
breaks down. It’s even worse when it happens in
the middle of a cold Ontario winter. No matter when it
happens, a broken furnace is the kind of home renovation
that requires a lot of money — and often,
Kim Neil had been living with her husband and daughter
in their 1950s-era Ottawa home for eight years when the
27-year-old natural gas furnace just wouldn’t
work any more.
Ottawa, Ontario - 1950
Like any furnace replacement, Neil knew the
renovation would be costly. But her Ottawa furnace
contractor told her she could offset some of the cost of a
replacement furnace by participating in the Canadian
Retrofit-Homes initiative, and the province of
Ontario’s Home Energy Savings program.
Home energy audit
To qualify for government grants and rebates, Neil had a home
energy audit conducted by a certified Ottawa
Home Energy Advisor. During the audit, she learned she could
be eligible for $1,000 and more in government grants, for
replacing her furnace and making other energy-saving
renovations and improvements to her home.
Neil says the Home Energy Advisor helped her understand
how energy-saving home renovations could help to lower her gas
and electricity costs by reducing the amount of energy it took
to keep her Ottawa home comfortable.
While Neil was faced with an immediate need for a
replacement furnace, it makes sense for homeowners who are
concerned about the age of their home’s furnace to
have a home energy audit sooner, rather than later.
That way, when the old furnace breathes its last,
they’ll be prepared to make a smart choice in a new
high-efficiency furnace — and get the
rewards of Canadian and Ontario government grants and
rebates for energy-saving retrofits.
“It was a positive experience and I have already told my
friends about the program,” Neil says. A home energy
assessment “is well worth the money you spend on it,
and you have the grant to help you pay for a big
ticket item like a furnace.”
