Home Renovation Tax Credit lets Canadians claim up to $1,350

Canada’s Home Renovation Tax Credit lets homeowners renovate and get up to $1,350 in tax credits towards their 2009 income tax.

Eligible renovations include energy-saving furnaces, air conditioners, windows, insulation and any other improvement meant to be a permanent part of a Canadian home or vacation property.

The Canadian government announced the Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) in January, 2009, as part of its Economic Action Plan.

The HRTC allows families to claim 15 per cent of their renovation expenses, between $1,000 and $10,000, on their 2009 income tax return. This measure gives families up to $1,350 in nonrefundable tax credits, which reduce the total amount of income tax they must pay.

Home renovation tax credit benefits Canadians

The Canadian government expects the HRTC will help Canada’s economy by encouraging homeowners to buy home improvement products, and use renovation services, provided by Canadians and Canadian companies. More than 4.6 million Canadian families could directly benefit from the Home Renovation Tax Credit.

The home renovation tax credit, plus tax-free grants and rebates through ecoENERGY and provincial grant programs, adds up to big savings for Canadian homeowners.
Peter Moffatt, President of Building Insight Technologies

“All energy-saving renovation products and services qualify for the Home Renovation Tax Credit,” says Peter Moffatt, president of Building Insight Technologies, a leading energy audit company. “That means there’s never been a better time to improve your home’s energy efficiency. The home renovation tax credit, plus tax-free grants and rebates through ecoENERGY and provincial grant programs, adds up to big savings for Canadian homeowners.”

The home renovation tax credit applies to renovations made, or energy improvement goods acquired, between January 27, 2009, and February 1, 2010, and can be claimed on 2009 income tax returns only. A line on the 2009 income tax return form lets homeowners enter the expenses they are claiming towards the credit. All expenses must be supported by valid receipts and documentation.
