An electricity price shock is about to hit.

In May 2010, Ontario increased the price of power paid to generating companies.

This increased rate, combined with the newly introduced HST, will mean Ontario homeowners can expect to see the cost of each month’s hydro bill increase by up to 16 percent, unless they have a fixed-price contract.

Smart meters

While the cost of electricity continues to rise, Ontario homeowners will soon see new smart meters installed in their homes. These smart meters keep track of when the home uses electricity, and apply different electricity rates based on the time of day.

Under Ontario’s new time-of-use hydro rates, electricity used at peak times, such as weekday afternoons, will cost more than electricity used during the off-peak times, like the middle of the night.

To help Ontario homeowners reduce energy use and lower their energy bills, many local utilities recommend a home energy audit as a good first step.

An energy audit helps homeowners find out how much energy their home is consuming, and figure out how to make it more energy efficient. The Ontario government will help pay 50 per cent of the cost of a home energy audit, up to $150.

By getting a home energy audit, Ontario homeowners can qualify for up to $5,000 in provincial home energy improvement grants from the Ontario Home Energy Savings Program.

According to the Ontario government, which administers the Ontario Home Energy Savings program, a home energy audit and home energy renovations can help reduce home energy costs by as much as 30 percent or more.
