What you need
To become a HomePerformance Advisor, you’ll need pre-requisite skills,
an equipment package, training and certification to operate
as an official energy advisor under the ecoENERGY Retrofit program.

Pre-requisite skills
To apply to become a HomePerformance Advisor, you should have a number of
pre-requisite skills or experience, including ...
- Home inspector training or ...
- A minimum of two years experience in the building/renovation industry.
Plus ...
- An understanding of construction terminology,
building materials and techniques.
- A thorough understanding of household heating appliances.
- Be physically fit.
- Be computer literate.
- Have excellent communication skills.
Building Insight does not offer upgrade training
for advisors who do not meet
the pre-requisite skills — please contact your local college for upgrade training.
Equipment requirements
To become a HomePerformance Energy Advisor, you
must have your own equipment,
including ...
- Your own vehicle
- A blower door
- Notebook or desktop computer (1GHz or higher) with colour printer
- A digital camera
- Sheet feed scanner
- High-speed internet connection
- Portable ladder
- A variety of small hand tools
Training
You’ll learn the specific skills you’ll
need to be a HomePerformance Advisor
at an official training course. During this four-day
intensive, you’ll receive ...
- Extensive classroom theory
- Opportunities for field practice
- Computer and software set-up assistance
- Technical support
Certification
Once you complete training, you will demonstrate
competency by performing five
solo ecoENERGY assessments. Your instructor will
review your work and provide valuable feedback.
You’ll become officially certified once
you have successfully passed a two-hour online
examination administered by Natural Resources Canada.
By signing a contract, advisors agree to be bound by the terms and conditions
of Building Insight’s license agreement with Natural Resources Canada.
Advisors who fail to follow these terms and conditions will be de-certified.
Building Insight performs regular quality assurance
on all aspects of an advisor’s work.
Quality assurance activities include surveying
customers and on-site visits by our field coaches.
Code of Ethics
You’ll work under strict Code of Ethics
guidelines developed by Natural Resources Canada.
- As a HomePerformance Advisor,
you are a professional who offers unbiased advice.
Your duties must be exercised with integrity,
fairness, and impartiality and shall not be
influenced by conflicting interests.
- Advisors must recommend customers receive more than one bid prior to
selecting a contractor.
- Under no conditions may an Advisor
accept nor offer a commission for retrofit
services and materials.
