Saving energy is important to Toronto homeowner Vimal Shah and his family.
They knew it made sense to reduce the family’s home energy consumption, so when they learned about the Canadian government’s ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes initiative, they decided to use the government grants and rebates to offset the costs of energy renovations and improvements for their 1983 two-storey brick Toronto home.
“We were looking to reduce the amount of energy that we were using in the house,“ says Shah. ”As a result of the renovations we have seen a drop in our hydro and water bill.”
An Ontario Home Energy Advisor conducted a home energy audit on Shah’s Toronto home, and recommended the best renovations and improvements for saving energy in the home.
Shah followed the Energy Advisor’s suggestions and installed a new high-efficiency condensing gas furnace, a new Energy Star-rated central air conditioner, and four new low-flow toilets that save gallons of water with every flush. All of these renovations have made a significant improvement to the energy-efficiency of Shah’s Toronto home.
“The availability of the grants helped with the cash flow,” says Shah. And the renovations he made help reduce the flow of energy into — and out of — his Toronto home.
Replacement air conditioner and toilets
Shah installed a replacement air conditioner that is Energy Star-rated and uses less energy to begin with. And the Toronto home’s new high-efficiency condensing gas furnace harnesses more heating energy from the natural gas that powers it, instead of letting a substantial amount of heat flow away up the chimney, like the old gas furnace did. And of course, the low-flow toilets use less water all around.
Shah says the energy audit, renovation and grant process is “simple,” and firmly believes more Canadians should take advantage of the energy savings that come from home energy renovations and improvements.
Since he was able to get grants and rebates through the ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes grant program and the Ontario Home Energy Savings program, he’s even more pleased.
But it’s not just about the grants — it’s about making the best use of energy resources by reducing the amount of energy used in each home. “As North Americans we need to be mindful of the resources that we do have, and learn how to use them wisely.”
