When he heard the Canadian government was giving grant money for energy renovations, Ottawa homeowner Kenneth Korporal figured he’d better start making improvements to the home he’d lived in for six years.

He didn’t know how long the government grant program would last, and he wanted to take advantage of the grants and rebates to offset the cost of energy-saving renovations to his 1979 Ottawa home.

Home energy audit

When he had an Ottawa Home Energy Advisor in to conduct an energy audit on his house, Korporal figured he was bound to learn about a few recommended home improvements and renovations.

But what surprised him was the state of his home’s windows. He hadn’t thought the windows were in bad shape, but says the Advisor pointed out places where the frames were rotting.

It quickly became clear: the windows had to be replaced, and by improving them, Korporal would be able to improve his home’s energy use rating, too.

High-efficiency furnace

In addition to installing new Energy Star-rated windows, Korporal learned about high-efficiency condensing gas furnaces, which help save energy by using less fuel, more efficiently. Because they circulate warmed air through the home even when the furnace isn’t producing heat, they can help reduce fuel bills, and provide a useful means of ventilating the home as well.

Low-flush toilet

Besides reducing energy use, Korporal learned that he could reduce his household water consumption by as much as one-third, simply by installing a low-flush toilet.

These high-efficiency toilets use as much as half as much water as conventional toilets, which means his water bills go down, too.

Energy saving

Now that the work’s done, Korporal says “no doubt it is more efficient, and [he has] lower cost fuel bills.”

He hasn’t calculated exact amounts yet, but estimates he’s getting a 15 percent savings on his gas bills.

Korporal says the investment pays off in the medium-term, but adds, “there’s an immediate return on comfort.”
