Insulation scores savings

Unlike many homeowners who do energy saving renovations and improvements on their houses, Ontario homeowner David Martin lives in a newer house.

But ever since his Oakville, Ontario, home was built in 2003, he’s felt a chill — and suspected it was because there was insufficient insulation in the attic.

The Energy Advisor explained that Martin needed to install more attic insulation to make the Oakville home more energy efficient.

It was a simple, straightforward renovation that was eligible for grants and rebates, and Martin lost no time in calling an Oakville-area insulation contractor.

Attic insulation

“The attic was completely reinsulated,” says Martin. “The guy just got up in there and blew it in.”

Now the Oakville home’s attic has an insulative value of R-50, which Martin says makes the whole house feel warmer. “You can feel the difference in the rooms, particularly at the end of the house.” The home costs less to heat, because it wastes less energy, and therefore creates less greenhouse gas emissions.

Martin is so pleased, he’s telling his friends, relatives, and Oakville neighbours to sign up for home energy assessments so they, too, can discover ways to save money and energy in their homes.

“The whole grant program is to increase efficiency, which cuts down on greenhouse gases. If we do it in enough houses, it’s a substantial savings.”

Making an investment in home energy efficiency is “a long long term thing,” says Martin. But it’s worth it. “It’s a win, win, win.”
