Efficient windows make home
warmer and quieter

After 14 years of living in his Mississauga home, Nazim Rehmani was getting a bit tired of hearing airplanes overhead.

That’s because he lives on the flight path to Toronto’s Pearson Airport, where hundreds of planes take off and land every day.

When he was searching the internet for ways to make his Toronto-area home quieter, Rehmani came across information about the Canadian government’s ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes program.

Grants and rebates

He discovered that by installing new high-efficiency windows, which would make his home quieter, he could get hundreds of dollars in grants and rebates from the federal and Ontario governments.

Plus, by insulating and doing more energy-saving renovations, he could enjoy a quieter home that would earn him even more grants and rebates.

Rehmani decided to book a home energy audit right away. “It’s simple,” he says. “Just one phone call to get your first audit, then you do your work, then another call for the second audit and then you get your rebates.”

High-efficiency windows

When Rehmani had his first home energy assessment, he saw it was clearly time to replace the 1986 home’s old windows. “I could see that the wood frames around the windows were rotting, and [the windows] were sliders. I needed them to be more air-tight and wanted to reduce the noise.”

He installed 28 high-efficiency windows which were Energy Star-rated for the Toronto climate zone. Not only are the new windows better at keeping the indoor air at a constant temperature, but they also seal out noise.

Insulation

In addition to installing new windows, Rehmani learned his home was in need of more attic insulation, which would help keep the indoor temperature constant, and add further soundproofing to his home.

He upgraded his attic insulation with blown-in cellulose insulation, to achieve an R-60 insulative value. That’s even better than his recommended target of R-50, and the extra insulation made a significant difference to the home’s comfort and energy savings.

Air sealing

While the insulation and windows helped to make Rehmani’s home quieter and more comfortable, he also discovered he needed to do a significant amount of air sealing to reduce the amount of warm indoor air that escapes to outdoors in the winter.

Because air can move through tiny cracks and gaps in a home’s walls, floors and ceiling, as well as through the spaces around doors and windows, it’s important to seal up any cracks, gaps and holes that might exist. By weatherstripping and caulking these gaps, Rehmani was able to make his home less drafty, and can now keep out both the noise and the pollution of overhead jets.

Energy savings

Rehmani is happy with his improvements. “The house is quieter ... I don’t hear the noise. I used to have cold spots in my house and my daughter needed to use a portable heater in her room. Now the temperature is the same throughout the house.”

Plus, he adds, he’s saving about 25 percent on his home energy costs. “I expect to get my money back in seven to eight years.” And the grants certainly helped. “The rebate helped pay for the insulation.”

And while they’re not covered by the ecoENERGY grants, Rehmani also installed two silent wind turbines to help with home energy generation. “It’s all about going green. I noticed a difference in my energy bills and I wanted to do my part to reduce my carbon footprint.”
